Keith Haring sticker

The downtown art scene during the late ’70s and early ’80s was a very accessible place for the onslaught of young artists who arrived in droves. Self promotion went beyond dropping off a sheet of 35mm slides and a resume to the right gallery — artists created temporary art works such as graffiti, costumes, installations and performances, to stand-out in the crowd. Galleries and art dealers were also noted for their marketing and promotional activeties. This sticker was one of the many give-aways at Keith Haring’s first one-man show at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1982.I knew Keith from the Mudd Club and knew something was up when I saw him working at the gallery a year before his first show there.
